Your thoughts, beliefs, and actions are connected and extremely powerful. Many people plod through life believing that success has eluded them because they lack abilities or just bad luck. Actually, the most powerful predictor of your success is your mindset.
What Exactly Is Mindset?
The term mindset simply refers to your overall temperament or disposition. How do you think about yourself, your community as well as the world. For example, do you believe that life is what is happening to YOU PERSONALLY? Do you believe that most things in life are beyond your control so therefore, not really your responsibility, fault or obligation? Or, do you believe that life is what you make it, therefore YOUR extra effort is essential for you to succeed?
Your beliefs and attitudes are the foundation of your mindset which guides all your actions and behaviors in life. That mindset informs how you think about yourself, how you take care of and react to others, and just how you respond to all the variables that come your way in everyday life.
Your mindset establishes how you make sense of the world, how you think about yourself, as well as your ability to deal with all the positive and negative aspects of your life.
How Do You Change Your Way Of Thinking?
Your mindset is something you learn over time. You started to develop your mindset as a child, and it has and will continue to evolve as you age.
Mindset is the result of practice, behaving in certain ways, and solidifying neural pathways in your brain. The good news is, it is never too late to learn to change your way of thinking, aka mindset.
The first step would be to identify your present mindset and how it influences your conduct. Start off by seeing your thoughts in response to other people as well as your reaction/response to life’s conditions. How do you speak to yourself? What exactly is your auto response when anything bad happens? What exactly is your general attitude most of the time? Becoming conscious of your mindset will help you see where you need to make adjustments.
The second step requires you to become aware and conscious of your behavior. The old adage “fake it until you make it” has some credence when attempting an attitude adjustment. Do you want to be more positive? Act more positively in a variety of situations. Want to embrace a little risk? Start by taking small risks regularly. By consciously adopting these behaviors, you can become aware of how they make you feel and the various outcomes from acting in these new ways.
Stick With It!
Changing behaviors is hard, and transforming attitudes is even more challenging. Make a focused effort every day to change your mindset and embrace the new ways of thinking. Be sure you are very clear with yourself about why you are deciding to follow a brand new mindset, as knowing the “WHY” behind your transformation will keep you inspired and focused on your ultimate goal.
Start by changing small things, then build up to making more significant differences in your behavior and attitude. Through small, incremental changes, you can achieve real transformation. Know that each day you are working on your new mindset is one step closer to your new way of thinking.
Changing your attitude is essential if your current way of thinking is holding you back from attaining your goals. Not everyone has to change their mindset completely. You may just need to change a few crucial areas.
Knowing yourself and your current mindset will be crucial, as is having regular check-ins with yourself to evaluate your progress. Be patient, as changing your ways of thinking about the world will take time. Know you are making these changes for the right reasons. This will lead to you becoming the best person you can possibly be.
